Sharing the same name as the capital of Ireland, the East Bay city of Dublin celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day this weekend with various events including a parade, festival, 5k run and more.
The thirtieth annual city of Dublin Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration took place the weekend of March 16 and 17 throughout the city, whose namesake reflects the Irish roots that took place in Dublin’s early years. The festivities started on Friday night with a Green & White Gala at the Dublin Senior Center. Saturday’s events kicked off with a pancake breakfast at the Alameda County Fire Station #16 with a parade following along city streets. The Shamrock 5k Fun Run & Walk took place Sunday morning starting and ending at the Civic Center after taking place throughout city streets.
After the start of the parade coincided the most popular part of the celebration – the two-day festival at the Dublin Civic Center with vendors, food, entertainment and a carnival with rides for all ages. The thirtieth annual celebration is one of Dublin’s major festivities bringing in many people from all over the area via being located off Highway 580 and between two BART stations. The Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (Wheels) was offering free bus rides on Route 10 all weekend for festival-goers taking BART to one of Dublin’s two BART stations.

A day of entertainment, fun activities, and food booths were set up at the Hayward city hall plaza as residents anticipated the first day of spring.
The event, “Spring Equinox Festival,” debuted on Sunday, March 17, 2013, to celebrate Hispanic culture and the occurrence of equinox. Among the sponsors were Telemundo, La Raza 93.3, Xfinity, and KIQI-AM.
A variety of performers showcased their talents on the stage set up in front of city hall. Ollin Anahuac performed an Aztec dance wearing colorful and traditional costumes. Minerva Rock band covered Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” and “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. Other performers included Mariachi Infantil, Francisco Flores, and Jonathan Santana.
There were inflatable bouncers set up for kids to enjoy. For adults, a “beer garden” was situated near a food booth.
Chabot’s own KCRH 89.9 FM was there to provide music for the spectators. It was also a good opportunity for the station to promote the program and to network.
DJ Big Diaz, Super Yazzy, and Ellen Perez helped introduce some of the performers along with main host Francisco Sanchez. Promotions Director Ellen Perez recalled how KCRH got involved with the event.
A lady approached her at Starbucks one day because the former was “fascinated by the way [she is] coordinating things.” Perez was doing some work for the radio station at the time. It turns out that the lady was about to meet the person in charge of the event.
“I met them all together as a group and then we just networked and connected, and so it all started with a friendly conversation at Starbucks,” Perez said. The station will benefit from the said event.
The audience was attentive to the performers on stage. However, local resident Angie Perez said, “I expected more.” She suggested that it should cater to kids even more. “It’s not really enjoyable for [kids]. They can’t really see things and get excited; that’s the most important thing for family events.”
