Chabot Business Award Ceremony

The Business Department recognizes its students for their hard work and academic achievements.

On Tuesday May 7 faculty, students and families gathered in the 700 Building South Wing Events Center to highlight the achievements of students. The event kicked off with live music by the group Off the Shelf who set the mood with songs like Taking Care of Business.

In the beginning of the ceremony Alexander Collins who received a Business Student award said “I don’t really know what to expect. It’s pretty exciting.”

Opening remarks were given by Dean Tom Clark who opened the evening by saying “This is the time of the year that we should really just focus on student accomplishments and were looking ahead to the additional students we will be contracting in our fine programs.”  He proceeded to talk about the importance of the business career these students have chosen and how it is a vital occupation for our community and nation at large.

There were a total of 33 award recipients in this years award ceremony which split the awards into: individual class awards, support team learning assistants tutor awards and specific major awards. As students were called up to receive their awards, a slide was shown that expressed their accomplishments and strong characteristics that made them worthy of the award they were receiving. Students were then presented with a certificate and a copy of their slide which was given by business faculty members.

Pee Xiong recipient of the BUS 10, Business Law Award was recognized for her excellent work in class. She achieved a perfect score in Business Law which was a first in this class and was described as being “a superior student who is very helpful with her classmates.”

Upon receiving her award Xiong said “I’m excited. I was surprised I got nominated but these types of things give you the energy to work harder.”

The Ceremony proceeded to highlight the students and included a raffle with gift cards to the Chabot Bookstore. Everyone present in the room looked extremely proud and happy for all the students who received an award.

Norberto Ruiz Business faculty member said “It’s a great way to celebrate and these types of events are always good. We hear a lot of bad news so it’s great to be able to do some good news. People here need to be recognized for all the good things they do and it is great to highlight these people in these events.”

Chabot Bi-law revision

Chabot students will have a more accountable student government as a result of a revision to one of the student senate’s governing documents.

“To interact with students, identify [their] needs and priorities, and advocate for them,” said Student Senate of Chabot College (SSCC) Senator Luis Flores by way of describing the primary duties of the student senate.

Flores indeed advocated for students when he sought revision on the SSCC Bylaws, which included the clarification of roles and frequency of meetings of the Judicial Review Committee (JRC). Current members of the senate voted unanimously to pass his proposal.

Thus, instead of meeting once every semester before the last student senate meeting, the JRC will have to meet every month as part of the revision that will take effect in the next academic year 2013-2014.

The JRC is responsible for reviewing student senate stipends and identifying members who are not in compliance with their responsibilities set forth by the bylaws. According to Senator Nakisha Thompson, “This is to ensure that every [senate member] is on top of their specified duties that they were sworn in to do.”

The SSCC Bylaws is a governing document that stipulates responsibilities and qualifications of each student senate member. “The bylaws are very important; it helps the new senate,” Thompson stated.

There are eight remaining senators as of late. Removal of some senators was due to failure to attend required meetings, while some members did not “follow through with their ‘promise’ to be [representatives] of the student body.”

“As a result [of the revision], students will have a more accountable government,” Flores adds.

Public Meeting on Measure B Held at Chabot

On Wednesday, April 24, the committee overseeing budget allocations to two colleges met at Chabot and discussed progress as well as future infrastructure improvement plans.

The Citizens’ Oversight Committee held its second public meeting for 2013 at Chabot. Among the attendees were committee Chairperson Kim Huggett, district Interim Chancellor Dr. Judy E. Walters, new members Linda Smith and Helen Bridge, and Chabot student representative Andrea Preciado.

The committee was appointed by the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Board of Trustees to “[assure] voters that proceeds of the $498 million bond are spent as required by the ballot measure,” as stated in their annual report addressed to the community.

In 2004, voters passed Measure B – a general obligation facilities bond – to finance capital improvement and modernization projects for Las Positas College and Chabot College. In addition to quarterly meetings, annual reports are distributed to households within the area.

Project planner Doug Horner discussed updates and future construction plans for Chabot. As of February 28, Chabot has spent 83 percent, or $211 million of its total budget allocation, as stated in the project progress report.

Among the renovations done were: seismic upgrade; plumbing; A/V equipment, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning or HVAC systems, telecommunication, and electrical system upgrades. The project also included computer labs and lecture spaces.

Construction on buildings 1800 and 1700 were 50 percent funded by the state, according to Horner. The former is now completed while planning and construction on Building 1700 is ongoing.

Construction on Building 1200/School of the Arts (SOTA) Plaza was also finished with a new “state of the art instructional recording studio.”

The P.E. Complex renovation is now on its final phase of construction. According to the report, “the scope of the project is the renovation of 70,700 square feet of academic, special program, athletic and office space.” The project is said to be completed by December 2013. Construction on Building 3400, which houses the BMW Automotive Technology program, will be completed by November 2013.

The report also stated that planning is underway for the renovation of Building 100 or the library. Renovation will include a remodel of the first floor, lighting, furnishing, and HVAC. It will also “consolidate the Center for Teaching and Learning programs into one space.”

New signage and landscaping for the Hesperian Boulevard frontage project are underway. Also, a security project for parking lots G, H, F, and J is currently out to bid.

Helen Bridge commended the project and said, “I think that the money was used very well to get the new computers and to get the arrangements made so that everybody can contact everybody at anytime.” Bridge was mainly impressed by “the way the buildings are now wirelessly connected.” She is representative for the senior citizen organizations.

The next committee meeting will be held on July 24, 6 p.m. at Las Positas College. The project progress report, Measure B annual report, and meeting minutes are available on the website: www.clpccd.org/bond.

As mentioned by district Facilities Specialist Zahra Noorivaziri, the meetings “[are] for the taxpayers.” Community members are always welcome to participate.

On April 25 the Chabot College Health Center teamed up with the Students for Social Justice or SSJ for sexual assault awareness month

The event at Chabot College displayed a clothes line project which students displayed decorative jeans which hung from the trees in the courtyard. Ribbons represented one in 10 women through statistics said to be raped by the time they leave college.

Dominique Hail of SSJ said out one out of four women before they graduate college worldwide will be faced with rape, he also said Chabot College has 8,500 students and out of those students here at Chabot 2,000 of them will be raped.

This year Denim Day in United States is encouraging all their residents and people everywhere across the nation men and women, to help bring awareness to sexual assault and give support to its survivors.

Here in California the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault or CALCASA busily prepared for Denim Day by sponsoring a rally that stood at the State Capitol in Sacramento. It featured legislative speakers, volunteers, survivors, district attorneys and advocates in the effort to bring awareness.

Denim day at Chabot was geared to encourage everyone to help in the movement to symbolize this important day as well sexual awareness month for justice brought in the behalf of all women who have faced sexual violence. Many students, faculty and clubs throughout “campus believe that by preventing and changing the attitude of those that tolerate sexual assault can help in the end to all sexual assaults and speak up.”

Many students present at the event replied, “There is no excuse and never an invitation to rape”.
