Last Friday there was another flea market on the Chabot College parking lot.
The weather was nice and there was a lot to see and buy. What made it especially great to its guests this last Saturday was that this flea market was so rich with variety. There are people selling their stuff yard-sale-style and there were people professionally selling clothing, purses, antiques, jewelry, stones, gardening supplies and of course food. You can find a diversity of hot dogs and also many other different things to eat.
“I like to find interesting and rare things. You find different people with different talents, for example there was a woman who made art of melted crayons.” said Andrea Preciado.
Something that not everybody might know is, that this flea market has been going on for over 20 years here at Chabot, sponsored by the ASCC (Associated Students of Chabot College), assembled to provide leadership, representation, and assistance to our Chabot College Students.
There are 300 vendor spaces at the flea market, anyone can rent. Each vendor space is the size of two parking spots, but if you have a lot to sell, you can also rent 3 parking spots for the day. Non-profit organizations can even rent the space for free.
“I like meeting the vendors and listening to their stories; I also enjoy the family friendly environment.” said Eliaser Hernandez.
If you take the time to browse this flea market, you might find great treasures you would never find anywhere else.
“I like antique stuff when I go to the flea market, so when I go I like to look for treasure – something that is unique. I like to go to the flea market with people who enjoy to spend the whole day there.” said Ricardo Aranha, Chabot student.
And if the weather continues to be as great as last Saturday, there is a great chance that many visitors will come and visit Chabot every third Saturday from now on. But even if it is raining, the flea market will be there for you to browse and explore. And during this time, parking is free on parking lot B for everyone.
If you want to sell anything at the Chabot Flea Market, you can go online at: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/studentlife/fleamarket/
The dates for this year’s flea market are May 19, June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15.

At 10a.m. on Monday, March 5,Chabot College will join the statewide efforts of students, teachers, faculty and concerned citizens of California’s colleges at the community, CSU and UC levels to march on Sacramento’s capitol in a show of solidarity to protect our higher education.
This upsurge of collective effort is due to increasing budget cuts, diminished availability of classes and rising tuitions rates. They will fight for lower fees, full-time faculty, access to counselors, affordable textbooks, and most importantly, classes.
Many, including clubs and members of the ASCC, have been working tirelessly to get Chabot College recognized at this annual event.
Students for Social Justice Club member, Fernanda Sanchez Pillot Saavedra will be attending this annual event, “I am going to the March in March because it was a great experience last year, and because I think that we should use every option available to fight for our education…the experience of being there and sharing all the energy of other people that are going through the same struggle and have the same concerns as you is very empowering.” This sentiment is echoed in the hearts and minds of many who have worked tirelessly to bring this event to life.
California students are part of the largest higher education system in the world. Chabot is one of 112 accredited colleges in California, educating 2.9 million students. California has had a strong commitment to affordable education, as evidenced by the Master Plan for Education passed in 1959, which has laid the groundwork for our current system. Due to current economic instability and California’s budgetary deficit, this great foundation is beginning to erode.
Students may want to maintain and protect the accessibility, affordability, and quality of our college. Students are starting to wonder when the cuts will stop. Many pitfalls have come along the way but the collective strength, and determination of these individuals has allowed for the opportunity of Chabot students to be a major force in this year’s march.
Six buses have been chartered, allowing Chabot students free transportation to and from the event. Students are asked to arrive at building 722 at 6:30a.m. March 5, busses will be leaving at 7. Students are scheduled to arrive back to Chabot around 4 PM.
Sign up in in the Cafeteria lobby, building 2300, where you can also find out more information about the March and about how the budget cuts effect us directly.
If you go…bring a pen to sign release forms, a cell phone to keep in contact with fellow students and staff. One energy bar will be provided to student,s but all are advised to bring water to stay hydrated and a lunch. Also make sure to dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes!

Danielle Preciado has been accepted as the new director of student life at Chabot College by the Board of Trustees.
As the director of student life, Preciado will guide all entities which encompass student life with planning, counsel and implementation, just to list a few.
The Associated Students of Chabot College, the flea market, the Inter-Club Council and the Student Health Center are some of the programs included under student life.
Preciado served as the executive assistant to the vice president of student services from 2006-11 which prepared her for her new position.
“Having been the executive assistant … I was very familiar with the operating procedures of all student service areas and programs,” said Preciado.
Preciado’s responsibility as VPSS executive assistant was to advise executives and managers about the Chabot – Las Positas Community College District codes and regulations, as well as federal and state laws that are pertinent to student behavior and activities.
Preciado’s work as a Daraja program assistant from 2001-06 introduced her to Chabot’s large and diverse student population.
“My experience of nearly a decade of employment at Chabot allowed me to move into the position as DOSL with pre-established positive and solid working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, ASCC and other students at Chabot,” Preciado said.
The professional relationships Preciado has established at Chabot have quite an impact.
“Even when she [Preciado] was not yet director her impressive work ethics displayed her potential to be one,” said ASCC Marketing Director Isabel Macasieb.
One goal Preciado wishes to accomplish as director of student life is to increase campus morale.
According to the Chabot College Department of Institutional Research, the current transfer rate is 37.8 percent which means that for 62 percent of students Chabot is the only college experience they will have.
“Part of my job is to promote school spirit,” said Preciado, “There is no reason we cannot enjoy a healthy and active student life here at Chabot.”
Preciado’s love for working with Chabot students is a motivation as well.
“The Chabot campus feels like a second home,” Preciado said, “I absolutely love working with Chabot students.”
Preciado’s new office is located in Building 700, Room 706.
