On Friday, Nov. 8, Chabot loss to a dominant performance by conference leader Gavilan.

Chabot took the court Friday ready to play the role of David in this David vs Goliath match against conference leader Gavilan.  Chabot came into this match feeling confident after their dominant win on Wednesday however Gavilan is no easy task.

The first game was a good battle.  Chabot and Gavilan would trade points often, however dominant front line play by Gavilan would keep them in the lead for most of the first game.  Chabot kept fighting but in the end they were unable to capture the lead and Gavilan took game one.

Game two started and Gavilan showed why they were leading the conference.  Gavilan dominated in all aspects in the second game, giving up very few points while scoring on almost a constant basis.  Gavilan took the second game with ease to give them the 2-0 lead.

Chabot was faced with an incredibly difficult task in winning three games in a row in order to beat Gavilan.  This task proved to be too much as Gavilan took game three and the match after a well played game three by Chabot was not enough.

In post game interviews, Coach Amber Sammons commented on her young team saying, “I feel like the past two games have been eye openers for their potential.  With a team of freshman, we have a great foundation for next year and tremendous potential.”

With only a few games remaining in the season, Freshman Amber Wright, was vocal about getting more of the Chabot community to come out to the games saying, “Volleyball is not something you see everyday.  It is not what you expect, there are people diving everywhere, it is a high level of play and it is intense.”  also adding at the end if the interview, “unlike football and basketball, we wear spandex”

Chabot Volleyball Falls in Uphill Battle vs Skyline 3-0

On Friday, Oct. 18, Chabot’s volleyball team lost a rough match at home against Skyline, three games to zero.

The ladies of Chabot’s volleyball team took the court on Friday looking to turn things around and get some more wins for the season.  This would prove tough as their opponent, Skyline, is also looking to improve on a rough season.

The first game started off a bit slow on Chabot’s side.  Skyline getting six points before Chabot was finally able to get some points on the board.  Once Chabot was able to get some points, they found their footing and it became a battle with Skyline.  Some mistakes by Skyline late in the first game seemed to give Chabot the momentum but they could not climb out of the six point hole they dug themselves early and lost the first game 25-19.

Chabot came out strong in the second game, scoring the first few points.  Skyline was struggling with communication and was unable to get any momentum until a few communication errors on Chabot’s part let Skyline get back in the game.  With dominant play by the front line of Skyline, they were able to pull ahead.  Late in the second game however, Chabot was able to capitalize on some Skyline mistakes and get back into the game.  In a close finish, Skyline was able to squeak by with the second game, 25-21.

Chabot came out in the third game needing to win the next three games in order to win the match. Skyline had no intention of letting them do that and came out ready to close this match out. Skyline started off with a 10-2 run and never looked back.  Chabot had a few moments where a possible comeback could be made but either mistakes or just great play by Skyline cut those hopes short.  Skyline finished off Chabot in a dominant 25-14 game three, taking the win for the match.

In post game comments, freshman Christiana Roberts pointed out the bright spot, saying “we are a very talkative team, making communication easy and one of our strong points.”  Freshman Amber Wright added to that praise saying “our communication on the court is very good, it has been since the start of the season.  We are starting to have fun and focus, and we just have easy things to fix now.”

Winery spikes volleyball team

Budget cuts are not the only financial concern for lady gladiators volleyball. Three months ago volleyball head coach Amber Sammons booked a wine tasting event that last year pulled in $5000. However two weeks before this year’s tasting, a new manger at the Ruby Hill Winery had double booked the event day, cancelling the Chabot fundraiser claiming, “The facility was not designed for this type of event.” The excuse seems hard to believe seeing that the team hosted the same event just one-year prior.

This is a challenge that Amber Sammons and the volleyball team are willing to rise to. They’ve scheduled another wine tasting event that will be held here at the Chabot campus at the new event center, which will take place sometime in March. In the meantime, the team is selling dinner cards for $10 with a value of $25 and useable at restaurants all over the US. You can visit the website www.restaurant.com for more information.

The team needs this money badly for new uniforms, new balls and equipment, and to pay the assistant coaches who have put forth so much of their time and energy and have not of yet been paid. Amber would like to stress that “…any donations are welcomed and much appreciated.” If you would like to make any contributions to the team please contact Amber Sammons at: asammons@chabotcollege.edu or visit her office in bldg 2600 room 2646.
